2 Preparation of 1-acetylthiohydantoin (5a)
Glycine (1.28 g, 11 mmol) and thiocyanic acid (0.76 g, 10 mmol) were dissolved in 15 mL of acetic anhydride. To this was added 1 mL of glacial acetic acid and then heated to 100°C with stirring for 40min. It was cooled and poured into 100 mL of ice water. A yellow solid precipitated. It was washed and recrystallized with ethanol. It was dried to give a pale yellow solid, 1.2 g, yield 76%.
