An aqueous ammonia solution (28%) (1000 ml) was added to 1,2-epoxypentane (30 g) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 18 hrs. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure, toluene (100 ml) was added and the mixture was re-concentrated to give the title compound (32.1 g, 89%).1H-NMR (CDCl3) δ: 0.94 (3H, t, J=7.2 Hz), 1.40 (2H, q, J=7.2 Hz), 1.86 (3H, brs), 2.50 (1H, dd, J=8.1, 12.6 Hz), 2.84 (1H, dd, J=3.0, 12.6 Hz), 3.51 (1H, m).
