To a solution of 1-cyclopropylethan-1-one (1.0 g, 11.2 mmol) in anhydrous Et2O (5 mL) was added a solution of MgMeBr (4.4 mL, 13.2 mmol) at a rate suitable to maintain gentle reflux of the solvent, to afford the expected alcoholate as a white precipitate. The reaction mixture was maintained refluxing for an additional 30 minutes, then stirred at RT overnight, and quenched with sat. NH4Cl solution (5 mL). The resulting mixture was extracted with Et2O (5 mL), and the combined organic layers were washed with brine (5 mL), dried over Na2SO4, and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo to afford 2-cyclopropylpropan-2-ol as a pale yellow oil (1.1 g, 92%). 1H NMR (500 MHz, CDCl3) δ 1.18 (s, 6H), 0.97-0.94 (m, 1H), 0.39-0.30 (m, 4H).
