To a solution of aldehyde 14 (10 g, 44.63 mol) in THF (100 mL) was added NaBH4 (2.0 g, 52.9 mmol) slowly at 0° C. under argon and armed to room temperature for 1 h. The suspension was quenched slowly with water and the organic layer was separated, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated to afford a solid (9.9 g, 98%): 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 1.47 (t, J=5.5 Hz, 1, CH2O), 4.85 (d, J=5.5 Hz, 2, C2OH), 7.26 (m, 3, ArH and PyH), 7.88 (d, J=1.8 Hz, 1, ArH), 8.11 (br.s, 1, NH).
