General procedure: To a solution of various benzaldehydes 4aew (10 mmol) dissolved in methanol (50 mL) was added sodium borohydride (20 mmol) at room temperature, and the mixturewas stirred at the same temperature for 30 min and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was diluted with methylene chloride (500 mL) and washed with water, and dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, and concentrated under reduced pressure to give the corresponding crude phenylmethanols 5a-w
