To a suspension of 2,4-dichloro-7H-pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine (600 mg, 3.19 mmol) in methanol (6 ml) wasadded sodiummethylate (1.2 g, 22.2 mmol) and the mixture was refluxed for 6 h. The reaction mixture was quenched with water (30 ml) and neutralized with acetic acid. The precipitate was filtered, washed with water (3 x 3 ml) and dried. The crude product was recrystallized from chloroform to give 2-chloro-4- methoxy-7H-pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyrimidine (478 mg, 82%) as a beige solid.
