General procedure: Ethyl cyanoacetate (1 mmol) and the appropriateamine (aniline, benzylamine or (2-bromoethyl)benzene; 1.5 mmol) weremixed and heated at 100 or 150 C for 9-15 h. Cooling gave a solidwhich was purified by flash column chromatography (silica gel) and/orrecrystallization. The procedure was adapted from Roifman et al., 2006[52] with some modifications.
