The acidic hydrolysis of a nitrile to an acid is described and is referred to as General Method Nitrile Hydrolysis. To a solution of(±)-2-hydroxydecanenitrile (2.0 g, 11.8 mmol) in 1,4-dioxane (10 mL) was added with 36% HC1 solution (10 mL) and the mixture was heated to 100°C while stirring and stirred at the same temperature for 12 h. The volatiles were removed to afford (±)-2-hydroxydecanoic acid (1.6 g, 60.3% yield) as a white solid, which wasused directly for the next step.
