General procedure: 3-aminophenylboronic acid (10.0 g, 0.073 mol),5-tertiary butyl-2-iodobenzonitrile (17.4 g, 0.061 mol), tetrakis (triphenylphosphine) palladium (3.62 g, 0.003 mol), potassium carbonate (16.9 g, 0.122 mol)150 mL of 1,4-dioxane, 150 mL of toluene, and 60 mL of distilled water were added and refluxed for 12 hours. After cooling to room temperature, extraction with ethyl acetate, and separation by column chromatography to give [Intermediate 1-d] 11.9 g (yield 78%).
