Aqueous hydrobromic acid (48 wt%, 1.1 molar equivalents) was added at room temperature to an 18.1 wt% solution of 2-methyl-6-nitroaniline (6O g) in ethanol/water (70:30 v/v). The mixture was warmed to 60 °C and hydrogen peroxide (30 wt% in water, 1.2 molar equivalents) was added. The mixture was stirred at 60 °C for 1 h and the cooled to room temperature. The precipitated product was filtered off, washed with ethanol and dried. Yield: 97.7%
