At 100° C., 50.0 g of dimethyl 2-(4-fluoro-2-nitrophenyl)malonate (starting material 1) are stirred in 400 ml of 6 molar hydrochloric acid for 20 hours, 400 ml of water are then added and the mixture is cooled to 0° C. The resulting precipitate is filtered off with suction, washed with water and 100 ml of petroleum ether and dried.
