Steps:
(+/-) Ethyl 5-methyl-3-nitromethyl-hexanoateTo a solution of (+/-) ethyl 5-methyl-3-bromo-hexanoate (leq) in nitromethane (4vol) at 0-S°C was added DBU (l.OSeq) dropwise over 30 minutes. After completion of the addition, the reaction mixture was allowed to attain 25-300C and stirred at this temperature for 2 hours. After completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was poured into a mixture of cone. HCl (0.4vol) and water (15vol) and stirred for 15 minutes. The reaction mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate and the combined organic extracts were washed with water. The combined organic layer was dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure to give the product as yellow oil. Molar yield = 96%.
