5b) 2-phenyl-5-nitro-1H-indole This intermediate is prepared by nitration of 2-phenylindole (6 g, 31 mmol) with NaNO3 (2.8 g, 33 mmol) in 97% H2SO4 (200 mL) at 5°C. Yield: 6.9 g (93%); m.p. 198.7-200°C (lit. 201-203°C; Wayland, E.N. et al. J.O.C. 1966, 65).
