Step 2: To a solution of 2 (175 g, 0.25 mol) in about 1000 mL of 1,4- dioxane was added NaOH (4 g) in 10 mL H2O. The mixture was kept at 100 0C overnight. After the reaction was completed, water (2 L) was added to the reaction mixture. Then, the precipitate was isolated. The filter cake was washed with ethyl acetate (50 mL x 5). The precipitates were combined and dried in air or vacuo to get (Z)-2-(2-(tritylamino)thiazol-4-yl)-2-(trityloxyimino)acetic acid 3 (135 g, yield 80%)
