Steps:

Acelaoyl chloride: Azelaic acid (40 g, 212.5 mmol) and thionyl chloride SOCl2 (101.13 g, 61.67 mL, 850.1 mmol) were heated to reflux (80 °) for 36 h, Then, excess of SOCl2 was distilled-off at 760 mm and the residue was purified by vacuum distillation to give acelaoyl chloride (47.8 g, 212.5 mmol, nearly 100 percent) as a clear liquid, b.p. 137 °C (7 mm).
