3B. 4-Amino-3-methoxy-benzaldehydeA stirred mixture of 3-methoxy-4-nitro-benzaldehyde (6.5 g, 35.9 mmol), iron powder (4.51 g, 80.8 mmol) and NH4CI (3.87 g, 71.8 mmol) in MeOH (50 mL) and water (50 mL) was heated to reflux for 3 hours. The cooled reaction mixture was filtered through a pad of celite and diluted with EtOAc (100 ml). The separated organic phase was washed with water (2 x 50 mL), dried (Na2SO4) and evaporated under reducedpressure to give the title compound (4.5 g, 83%) which was used without further purification.
