d 5-Allyloxy-2,2-dimethyl-1-(phenyl)methyleneindane A solution of benzylmagnesium bromide was prepared by dropwise addition of 1 ml of bromine and then of 3.42 g (27 mmol) of benzyl chloride to 0.66 g (27 mmol) of magnesium turnings in 50 ml of dry ether and boiling under reflux for 1 hour. After cooling, a solution of 2 g (9.3 mmol) of compound c) in 50 ml of dry ether was added dropwise and the mixture was boiled under reflux for 2 hours. Ice was then added and the mixture was stirred for 30 minutes. Dilute hydrochloric acid was then added, while stirring, until the solid present had dissolved completely.
