General procedure: NHS-Cn was prepared as described by Chen et al. (2011) with a small modification; end-bit binary acid (15 mmol each; C2, C3, C4, C5, C6, C8, C10, C14) and NHS (40 mmol) were dissolved in acetone (25 mL), and then EDC (30 mmol) was added to the solution. The clear mixture was gently stirred at 25°C for 24 h. After the acetone was removed by rotary evaporation under reduced pressure, the residue was washed several times with deionised water and then dried under vacuum at 50°C. The crosslinker thus prepared was characterised by the 1H NMR and FT-IR spectra.
