The HCI salt is obtained by dissolving the free base oil in methanol and adding an HCI solution in methanol. The solution is then cooled to complete crystallisation, and the solid filtered with vacuum to yield 3-[4-methoxycarbonyl-4-[(1-oxopropyl)phenylamino)]-1-piperidine]propanoic acid methyl ester hydrochloride (9.75 g, 47%) as a white solid in a pharmaceutical grade. m.p. 188-189 °C
