This solid is the dissolved in water (130 ml), then toluene (75 ml) is added and the mixture basified with a 25% potassium carbonate solution to pH =9. The layers are separated and the aqueous layer is extracted twice with toluene (60 ml). The combined organic layers are dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate, filtered and concentrated under vacuum to yield 3-[4-methoxycarbonyl-4-[(1-oxopropyl)phenylamino)]-1-piperidine]propanoic acid methyl ester (11.21 g, 60%) as an oil.
