2.2. General experimental procedure for acetylation of alcohols and phenols with Ac2O catalyzed by PS/GaCl3 complex
General procedure: To a solution of alcohol or phenol (1 mmol) and Ac2O (1.1-1.3 mmol) in methylene chloride (5 mL) was added PS/GaCl3 (0.1 mmol) and the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature. The progress of the reaction was monitored by TLC and GLC. After completion of the reaction, the catalyst was filtered off and washed with methylene chloride (2*10 mL) and the filtrate concentrated on a rotary evaporator under reduced pressure to afford the crude acetate product. Further purification was achieved by column chromatography on silica gel (Merck, 100-200 mesh, hexane-EtOAC, 90/10, v/v). The spent polymeric catalyst from different experiments was combined, washed with ether and dried overnight in a vacuum oven and reused.
