Steps:
3-Hydroxy-4-methoxybenzoic Acid (2)
A mixture of NaOH (1.0 g), KOH (1.5 g), and H2O (0.5 mL) was heated to160C; then isovanillin (1) (3.0 g, 19.74 mmol) was added. The reaction mixture was stirred at 160C for 20 min; 100 mL H2Owas added, and the mixture cooled to room temperature. The solution was acidified with concentrated HCl to pH 2. The solidwas separated by filtration and washed with water to give 2 (3.25 g, 98%).
