General procedure: A mixture of isatin (1.0 g, 6:8 mmol), and malonic acid (1.07 g, 10.3 mmol) in acetic acid (8 mL) was placed in an round bottomed flask and then refluxed for 12 h. Precipitated solid was filtered, washed with acetone, ether, and dried to give the desired product in 80 % yield.
