Steps:
1.5 Preparation of 4-nitronaphthalen-1-amine
To a solution of 1-nitronaphthalene (29 g, 0.015 mol) and powder hydroxylaminehydrochloride (50 g, 0.72 mol) warmed at 50 - 60°C in 1.2 L of 95 % ethanol was gradually added a solution of KOH (100g, 1.79 mol) in 500 mL of methanol with vigorously stirring over a period of 1 h. Additional 1 h stirring required, and the warm mixture was poured slowly into 7 L of ice water. The crude product was filtered and washed with water. Recrystallization from 95 % ethanol gave 12 - 13 g desired orange needles 4-nitronaphthalen-1-amine, yield 55-60 %; m.p. 190 - 191°C.
