The triethylamine was cooled in a 27 ml ice bath, then 18.5 ml of formic acid was added dropwise, followed by o-trifluoromethylbenzaldehyde (10.5 g, 60.3 mmol) and2,2-Dimethyl-1,3-dioxane-4,6-dione (10.0 g, 69.4 mmol),The reaction was refluxed at 100 °C for 2.5 hours. After the reaction was cooled to room temperature, water (100 ml) was added, the pH was adjusted to 3 with 2N hydrochloric acid, and the mixture was evaporated.Drying in vacuo gave 14.3 g of the solid, o-trifluoromethylbenzenepropionic acid.
