3.4.3. Preparation of the Ether-Glycerol 4a-i by Hydrolysis of Acetal 3a-i
General procedure: To a solution of 4-alkoxymethyl-2,2-dimethyl-1, 3-dioxolane (1.0 eq.) in methanol (approx. 5 mL), HCl (2 M, 2.0 eq.) was added and the solution was heated to reflux for 4 h. After cooling to room temperature, the mixture was poured into water, the organic layers were extracted with ether, dried over Na2SO4 and the solvents were removed under vacuum. The residue was purified by flash chromatography with hexane/ethyl acetate 3/1 v/v.
