The preparation of ethyl acetoacetate is a classic laboratory procedure . It is prepared via the Claisen condensation of ethyl acetate. Two moles of ethyl acetate condense to form one mole each of ethyl acetoacetate and ethanol.

1. 80 mol of concentrated sulfuric acid was added with 150mol absolute ethanol and is heated to 85°C then 100mol of diketene was added and stirred at 125 °C for 6h. The ethyl acetoacetate solution was obtained by distillation under reduced pressure, the yield was 95%, and the solution was directly put into the next reaction.
