Introduction: Butyric acid is a short chain acid which acts as direct nutrient of enterocytes enhancing their differentiation, growth and proliferation of villi, intestinal crypt dept, the development of positive gut microflora, and the reparation of gut walls lesions due to pathogens and nutritional intolerances.
The butyric acid in form of glycerides is gastric by-pass, slow release of butyric acid in the gut due to the enzymatic action of the pancreatic lipases which separate butyric acid from glycerol. The emulsifying action of these compounds enhances the digestibility (and the energetic level of the diet) specially in young animals. They are flavoring substance which has an appetizing action which enhances the feed intake.
