Reaction Conditions:
Stage #1:phenol with potassium hydroxide in ethanol at 45; for 0.166667 h;
Stage #2:1-phenyl-2-bromoethane in ethanol for 24 h;Reflux;
Steps:
1-(phenethyloxy)benzene
A solution of phenol (10.16 g, 108.09 mmol), KOH (3.027 g, 54.05 mmol) in ethanol (3.4 mL) was stirring at 45 °C for 10 minutes. To the reaction mixture 1-(2-bromoethyl)benzene (10 g, 54.05 mmol) was added, and the mixture was heated at reflux for 24 h. The mixture was concentrated in vacuum and the residue was dissolve in CH2Cl2. The organic layer was washed with aqueous 2N NaOH and H2O, dried (MgSO4) and the filtrate was concentrated to dryness. The crude product was purified by column chromatography on silica gel (hexane) to yield 1-(phenethyloxy)benzene (6.4 g, 32.32 mmol, 60%).
