Steps:

Add 1 N hydrochloric acid (200 ml) to a dioxane (200 ml) solution of 4-methylsulfonylbenzaldehyde dimethyl acetal (39.4 g, 0.171 mol) obtained in Production Example 2. The mixture was heated and stirred at 100°C for 20 minutes. After allowing the reaction mixture to cool, the crystals obtained by shrinking under reduced pressure were collected by filtration.After washing with water and drying, the title compound was obtained as colorless crystals (30.9 g, 98%).
